your code is heavily resource dependent/plateform dependent and these resources are not shareable across the team. the separate box in my team is not for developers to use, it is scheduled to do automatic tasks, such as nightly build and the unit tests.
Several years ago, I had a development environment a little similar to what you mentioned. We had serveral big Unix boxes as development servers, each person had virtual terminal to work on same code, which centralized stored in Clearcase on another server. The difference is we don't need download, upload code. Each developer owned a terminal, not a machine.
Basically I agree with you there is no need to setup a separate box to do compilation. It complicated process and very easy to get lost. For example, if you modified 20 files to fix a bug, after you copied to the separate box, most likely you gonna forgot what files changed or where changed if there is confliction.
