today,it's my pleasure to welcome kai-fulee ,president of google china,he will give us open talk about china,about google china,and pls welcome kai-fulee.
ok,thank you. ok,thank you very much,feng.i know after talk maybe a lot of questions still,feng is a one of the earliest employeer at google ,right? number? a few hundred ,and he is also working very closely with the china team.
so if you have any questions about the talk and some we dont get to talk. feel free to connect with him as well. throughly great to see so many familiar faces, old friends back in seattle again, and today,i am gonna tell u about what i've been up to for the last year and half, actually i think u know what i have been up to the first 2 months of this year and half.
but the remaining 16 months, there are lot of exciting things had happened.so i am gonna just to tell u about it. i am gonna to tell u about the opportunity for any internet company in china.and then tell u a little bit by the very high level we are trying to accomplish in china. how we are hiring great people, targeting great plans.
and then tell u a bit about how we are working with worldwide R&D,to really build great products for china and for world wide and we have special relationship with our system office in Kirkland and we want to do a lot of projects together.
so first, opportunity and challenges , well china is huge ,everybody knows that, i think everyone here knows that the internet population is rapidly catching up the US. that's about 140 million as of today,and it's getting close to the American internet population,but more exciting is growning 25% rather than 3%.so at this rate in a few years,china will be the largest internet country in whole world.even more excitingly broadband in the last year,china's broadband user overtook american broadband users.
many peolpe might assume china as a poor country,would have less broadband coverage. but thatz wrong. broadband is huge in china,because the metropolitan distribution matches very well,build up of great broadband that networks inside metropolitan areas.
mobile phones is even no comparison, they are 440 million paid subscribers in china and as u can see here there are many more mobile users than internet users, so many people maybe expericing internet the first time on their phone not on their pc. and the last one, even the bigger proportion comparison is that engineering graduates in china out number the us 8 to 1 .
so these are our reasons we want to be in china. we want to reach the internet population, take advantage of broadband and demonstrate our great products, such as google video and others. that do require broadband,which the mobile users and of coures high and engneering graduates.
but at the same time , china is full of challanges. some of the challenges are that the internet is a combination its much younger audience in china compare to the unite states, there are many more younger users,and users are much more interested in fun.and some are less interested in pursue the knowledge.
so if u go to the internet cafe, who's been to internet cafe in china?very very few. u might notice that the browser is not even installed or used in many ie on many machines,right? people are there are to do what? games,music,video, movies and occasionally browser window pops up,usually pop up Ad or some sort.
so browsing is not common and certainly so much further out for search,there's very gross-roots usage, a lot of the gross root users love entertainment and MP3 and games.and also there's a strong sense of community,so if u go to the one of the portals in china,look at one of the popular controversial news and you will see 10 thousand responses with people arguing with each other, the sense of community is very strong.
bbs, u know concept that nobody uses in us any more,Bulletin Board and i remember that from my college days,but in china how many page of view a day? one billion. so that's how alive and well the BBS is and the sense of community that that brings.
unfortunately, there's lake of credit system,you know ebay try to establish that didnt really quite flys, things like people and are not completely to build up trust over the internet, people are willing to meet each other, talk to each other and play games with each other. learn new concept over the internet but when they want to hand over money, they want to see the merchandise that the person that's selling to u?
okay, so that's different and of course not having credit cards causes a bunch of issues: advertisers're unable to track, returns as well, e commerce's slower to take off so that's a bit on the down side.
and then high growth market will have very rapid changes , new users are coming on board. leaders last year might not be leaders any more, so that's a quite the a dynamic market ,and of course government regulatory policys are different. US is about as open as u get.now many countries do have restrictions on the internet, and china is among them, aggressive fast moving competitors.
those we've seen that chinese internet companies realise that companies move fast and then they are also very aggressive ,in trying to get market share or perhaps brutal killing their competitors and things like that. it's rather like wild west in terms of internet competetion.
there's a perception that non-local internet companies fall.every talk i ever give those question always comes up, you know, company XYZ have all failed in china. why do you think u'll succeed.
some might even include us as companies that failed, and we havnt even started. so that mystery and legend needs to be disproved and google is certainly out and commited to disprove the multi-national internet companies can in fact succeed in china.
so that's the landscape. and i want to tell you little bit of our plan. as u might expect, you are not going to hear anything about our products or stratagem over all but i'll give u idea what we hope to acomplish in the coming years, and how we are going about building a team.
so back to some belief or mystery that internet multinational company shall fail in china,so Why should google be different? i think my primer answer for that is something eric schmidt said to me last week." we will take a ,long term view to win in china.
the chinese have 5000 years of history. google has 5000 years of patience ".we sure hope it happens a lot sooner than that, but we are making a long term bet.you know we are not in china to make a profit today.we are not in china to grab marketshare at all cost.
