Was in the same shoes a month ago. My TMobile Nokia died in less than a year. Got a 三星D528是“华铂”系列 in Shanghai on my biz trip there in July for about RMB 2900. It works great in China and US. The downside is the battery life is a bit short, may be caused by the rich features in the phone MP3/Video/1.3M camera with flash, etc.
One of my coworkers has a Dopod and it works ok. All mobile phones with Windows are called 智能手机。 netease.com's mobile section has quite a bit info for all the major brands.
Interesting thing is that similiar models offered by Nokia, Samsung in China market and US, the US models are serious downgraded in terms of workmanship, materials and of course, locked to the carrier in the US. Two of the most recent examples are the Samsung D807/US, D808/China and the LG Chocolate phone, the US models are just junk: Bulky, Cheap plastics and down market features. The reason is quite obvious, you get these phone for close to nothing and pay US 50 or more a month to use them. In China, you have to pay close to US 400-500 just to get the phone.
