I am extremely LUCKY: I was born in the right place and at the right time, and my brain is weired in a certain way. I am LUCKY to have a father who did not want me to become another him and let me find out what I want to do for my life. I am LUCKY that I found what I love to do and good at when I was very young.

To your friend's example, I am not sure if trying to immitate Mr. Buffet's investment is the best strategy. He said he buys stock/business that he understands, and he buys the at a good price.
There is a saying, you make money when you buy, not when you sell. That's kind of his philosophy. Not that everybody would agree with him, but he sticked to it and had success to show for.
