A model who lived on a diet of apples and tomatoes has died of anorexia on the eve of an international photo-shoot.
Ana Carolina Reston was 170cm (5ft 7in) tall and weighed just 38kg (6st) when she passed away on Thursday.
The brunette, who worked for Brazil's L'Equipe modelling agency, had spent the last three weeks in hospital after suffering kidney failure.
Her death comes after underweight models were banned from this year's Madrid fashion week. It will also re-ignite the debate surrounding size zero models which dominated other events including London Fashion Week.
Miss Reston, from San Paolo, is the second model to die this year.
In August, 22-year-old Luisel Ramos suffered a fatal heart attack during a fashion show in Uruguay. It was claimed she had been living off a diet of lettuce and soft drinks for three months.
Miss Reston, who had been modelling since 13 and had worked in China, Turkey, Mexico and Japan, was scheduled to take part in a photo-shoot in Paris the day after her death. Relatives last night told how she had seen specialists about her eating disorder but resisted admitting she was ill.
Cousin Geise Strauss, 30, who she lived with between modelling shoots abroad, said: 'She ate very little and recently she'd go to the bathroom and be sick as soon as she left the table.'
Steve Bloomfield, of the Eating Disorders Association, said: 'Models are being forced to maintain unnaturally low weights to get employment.'
