I am no expert on drinks or drinking, just some of my preferences.
Margaritas: Margarita is my kind of drink, no salt rim. When in a very nice and quite bar/restaurant, it is a good start to ask for a margarita, especially with a F.F. and having a nice chat. There are many variations, flavors of margaritas, and often, the quality of the drink depends on the bartender's skill and preparation, I think, or maybe it is the tequila. The best margaritas I had was in a small but nice restaurant, name Danley's on Clark st. in downtown Chicago, lived there for a year due to work. The owner is a friend's friend. I often go there with friends. My favorite dish is sea bass blackened; drink, of course, is margarita; the dessert we all like is a big ice cream chocolate cookie, size about 8 inches, always freshly baked, still warm when served with that sweet smell, still mouth watering when think of it.
Wine: Not a big wine drinker, will ask for a glass of wine when dine in a nice restaurant, that's about it. Wine culture seem to be too mysteries to me. My excuse is that we grew up with the white stuff.
White stuff: it is always a good idea to start with a bottle of 五粮液 when partying with a bunch of Chinese friends. The shots they have here are no match to our good stuff. Or maybe I am just inexperienced, but I take no salt. Talking about it, I did bring a bottle of Mao Tai to a friends' B-day party to Danley's a couple of years ago. After 1st round, nobody wanted to take 2nd shot. We still talk about it, even yesterday when out bowling.
Beer: when go out w/ friends after work or watch Super Bowl in a sports bar, most logical choice for drinks will be beer. My beer is Labatt Blue (Canadian beer) , or some Irish red beer, but no US beer. As my Canadian friends would say it: US beer is like making love on a boat – just F*** too close to water (tasteless).
Guinness and the green stuff: If you go out w/ English , especially Irish guys, the popular choice is Guinness. Of course, today is St. Patrick's Day, everyone drinks the green stuff, wear a green hat. They go so far as dyeing the Chicago River green in Chicago (https://www.saintpatricksdayparade.com/chicago/index.htm).
PS, I think Chicago downtown is the best in NA big cities, with a good combination of night life (good restaurants) and daytime activities on the lakeshore. There are fireworks every wed. and sat. night at Navy Pier in summer. And that is if you live in downtown, no traffic problems.
