If you are talking about real "bankers", my understanding is that they don't do much valuation/structuring (financial) work--they will provide some general insights but the execution team will pull the trigger.
I seriously do not see how much balancing work the bankers can provide. The bankers do have some leverage after after the engagement letter is signed, but according to my limited experience, I am not sure how much "balancing" they can impose on their clients. Occasionally one comes across un-sophiscated boss, but nowadays the clients are becoming increasingly experienced and would not budge a bit if the terms are not to theis satisfaction. Moreover, many such bankers do not have the necessary experience or people skills (other than certain senior bankers who can shamelessly offer various perks to the senior managment such as an expensive sports game ticket). Limited # of accounting firms makes the traditional barking game ineffective to the accountants either.
Of course, banks have been able to take advantage of the clients through other means--one example is through various trading schemes. But such is not done by an investment banker in its common sense.
