Dr. Hong-Jiang Zhang is the Managing Director of the newly established MSR Advanced Technology Center in Beijing. Hong-Jiang was the Assistant Managing Director and Senior Researcher of Microsoft Research Asia, responsible for research groups in media processing, media data management, information processing, search, and distributed systems, as well as legal, IP and operations of the lab. He jointed MSRA in 1999 from HP Labs(Palo Alto, CA), where he was a research manager.
Hong-Jiang is a Fellow of IEEE and is well known in the multimedia research community for his pioneering work in video and image content analysis, representation, retrieval and browsing. He has authored 3 books, close to 300 referred papers and book chapters, 46 US patents or pending applications. "Image and Video Processing in Multimedia Systems", the book he co-authored and published in 1995, was the first one addressed content-based image and video retrieval research. Many of these research works have become classical references in the respective research areas and formed the technology basis for several start-ups. He currently serves on the editorial boards of five professional journals and a dozen committees of international conferences. He is the Technical Committee Chair of the ACM Multimedia Conference, 1999.
