I am going back at the end of April, and I have given up on shipping my car back.
You have an option of buying a China-made car, tax free. It means that all imported parts in that car will be tax free for you. People told me that it amounts to about $1000 to $2000 depending on the car's import and domestic makeup.
If you are the 法人 of a JV or Direct investment company, then you have the right of importing a car. The import tax you pay is about 50% to 60%.
As for your used car, I have not heard any way you can bring it in.
Domestic cars these days are pretty good, and they are not that expensive. Also I feel that we need time to get used to the driving environment in China, and taxi (or other public transportations) is widely available. I don't think it is worthy to go through the trouble of getting a car in. But if you find out good ways, please share with us.
