Le Parkour
Firstly, Le Parkour and Free Running are one and the same. The latter was a term used to describe the motions of the sport in Jump London (a major televised representation of the sport), with the ideas of free movement inspiring the name. 'Parkour' is of French origin, and is the more commonly used amongst people associated with the sport.
The definition of Parkour is something quite hard to isolate, because everyone has a different opinion about what the sport is. Many people also feel that free running is beyond a sport, and that the discipline required to succeed is worthy of having a philosophy of sorts...
Le Parkour originally comes from the word 'parcour', loosely translated as 'obstacle course'. The 'K' came in later as a more modern and stylish approach to the word. In essence, 'obstacle course' sums up the ideas behind the sport - traceurs (the people who participate in the sport) treat city landscapes as one big playground, utilizing the architecture in a way that is both as stylish and graceful as possible. Rails, walls, and roof gaps are among the objects used; in a series of vaults, climbs, leaps and improvised movement.
Influences for Parkour include buildering (the use of buildings as rock climbing opportunities!) and gymnastics, amongst a number of others. Much of the techniques perfected in these two sports are combined to create a hybrid 'extreme' sport, with displays of the discipline found in the gymnasium coupled with the hazards of performing such actions on concrete surfaces.
In addition to the differences in the viewing of Parkour's meaning, the wide variety of motions found in the sport (motions being an attempt to describe different 'moves' - climbing, vaulting, jumps, catleaps, drops, rolling...) means that different traceurs style themselves according to what comes most naturally and appeals to that person's taste. Levity as a clan has a huge variety of different preferences, with some members leaning towards the tricking elements that can be found in Le Parkour, others to the climbing, and others to 'technical' elements such as 'rail-work'.
