Sharing the festive spirit with workers has cost the big end of town hugely this year, with budgets - like profits - up for most office Christmas parties.
As the party season began across Sydney last week, event planners were popping champagne corks as major corporates loosened purse strings and "spoilt" staff with French bubbly and Hollywood-style excess.
Vodafone, which reported a $110 million profit this year, led the festive celebrations, hosting two lavish Christmas parties for more than 2000 staff and clients, the first at a five-star city hotel on Friday.
With event planners estimating this year's average spend at $300 per head, workers were expected to share in the rewards of a good financial year.
Macquarie Bank - dubbed the "millionaire factory" for its recent record profit of $823 million and excessive management pay packets - is planning a "jungle fever" party for 650 of its staff at the Museum of Contemporary Art this week.
While the company would not comment on its party slush fund, it is estimated to be in excess of $100,000.
Motoring giant Honda held court at the newly refurbished Coast restaurant at Cockle Bay last week, taking over the entire venue for its staff soiree. - and Coast restaurant manager Kim Knudsen said he would not consider closing the restaurant for less than $30,000 during the peak Christmas period.
But while increased profits have boosted party budgets, managers are taking more care to curb excessive drinking and reckless behaviour.
Shuttle buses and maxi taxis were top of the hire list for party organisers mindful of drink-driving dangers during the Christmas season.
The Apparel Group, which hosted an Oscars theme party at NIDA for 150 staff from its Sydney, Shanghai and Hong Kong offices on Friday, bussed guests from company headquarters to the Kensington venue, then later to their planned after-party nightspot in Paddington.
"It's really important for us to make sure everyone is covered and taken care of," retail marketing manager Holly Martin said. "Things can go wrong at the end of the night if you're not careful and don't plan ahead."
David Grant, managing director of David Grant Special Events (DGSE), said employers were more aware than ever of duty-of-care obligations and the legal fallout that could come from not protecting staff during corporate celebrations.
He said some organisations were going to the extreme of hiring St John Ambulance officers to be on stand-by.
"If your best client's in his 60s and has a heart attack at your Christmas party, having a Packer whacker [defibrillator] on hand is just good business."
As for the drinks on offer, Mr Grant said cocktails were being shelved in favour of wine, beer and champagne.
"Three years ago it was considered too ostentatious to serve French. Now they want to be seen to be spoiling their guests with expensive bubbly," he said.
Sharing the spoils
- Vodafone: masquerade ball at Shangri-La Hotel for 1000-plus guests, followed by a staff party for 900 with a cowboy theme.
- Macquarie Bank: jungle fever at the Museum of Contemporary Art's Foundation Hall, for 650 guests.
- Warner Bros: so-hot-right-now singer Jade MacRae to give private concert performance at TV-themed party for 120 guests at Altitude.
- Sony Australia: the consumer electronics division will take over the Hard Rock Cafe for a rock'n'roll night with prizes for best dressed.
- IBM: the world's largest information technology company, held a massive party last week on the floor of the Sydney Stock Exchange.
- Honda: the car company closed Coast restaurant for a private party for 150-plus staff and clients, spending in excess of $30,000.
