1. I prefer to go to US drug store like Costco and CVS for nutrition, and online store for wisconsin 花旗参. High quality like What 安 said, and lower price.
If you go to China Overseas Service Center, make sure to buy expensive ones with clear trademark and FDA approval for your family.
2. Nowadays, you can buy everything in China. People in China like fancy product with premium brand to show status. I'd rather bring back IBM laptop with 5% employee discount (30% lower than the same model in China during the promotion) or Apple product such as new iPod 60G to play 15000 songs and 150 hrs movies (at least 15% lower than the same one in Digital Mall in China and don't worry about fake one).
3. I normally bring visa traveler check with me. No fee in US and 0.75% transaction fee in Bank of China. Or you can use Westunion to send overseas within only 2 days with the lowest fee as I compare against any other way or other bank.
4. Shanice: I just check HSBC website, No ATM fee only to HSBC ATM, pls verify. Etrade has 4.1% APR beginning with 3 month deposit and no fee to any ATM. To me, the deal term is more important than the rate.
For example, my uncle bought one type of 5-year fixed income product from China Industry and Commercial Bank. It looks like he can get 13% return in the 1st year, but only with very possible 4% in the 2nd, 2% in the 3rd year, 0% in the 4th, and -x% in the 5th. In the contract, the bank can recall anytime, but my uncle can't sell or withdraw anytime. I also check with my friends in finance industry. My suggestion is that never to buy complicated financial product in China unless you're lawyer expertised in finance.
5. For those who are betting appreciation of RMB can send as much US$ as you want to China and easily convert them to RMB in Bank of China with the lastest rate. The transaction fee has built into the rate. The difficulty is how to change back to US$ in future. Now the individual quota for traveler with Visa to enter US is $5000 or $8000 depending on the travel period and document you have. And you can only send $2000 once and up to $10,000 in a month to overseas. If you have green card or you're US citizen, you can't change RMB to US$. Although these days, RMB depreciate to 8.07, 1% higher than 7.99 3 weeks ago when I was in China.
Does anyone know how to use any other convenient and cost effective way such as setting up corporate account to operate the conversion?
6. Anyone: Please also advise which credit card gives the best rebate deal. The most banks only provide 5% for grocery, restaurant, and gas, and 1% for all.
Let's share the right way to save money or appreciate fortune together.
