I know we can get into a religiouis debate here, which I take zero interest in.
Here is my quick response.
In manufacturing, yes both Japan and China are strong. But I have said this for a long time, today's manufacturing is the agriculture of 19th and 20th century. The key value add is no longer there. There is no mystery in producing high quality goods in large scale, vs. 30-50 yrs ago.
Take a look at all the elements of the new economy, including R&D, services and entertainment, which area is not lead by the US?
If you look at the depth of research in universities, US is a few laps ahead in almost all areas.
For one thing, thanks to its vast investiment since late 50's in building resilient communication, we have today's vast world built on top of TCP/IP. Other countries are just copycats. Indeed, there were lots of contributions by well educated immigrants, which is another illustration of US's strength.
Most important is that the US has the most efficient and transparent capital market, and its economy is great at taking new risks.
