I have been back in China twice. I came to the US in 1993. After graduation, landed a decent job in a big telecom company. First visited back China in 1997 to promote online trading stuff, when Internet was new, I was even on a H1-B visa then. I found out the Internet stuff had a promising future but couldn't stay in China then since my career over in the US was also advancing, and the environment in China was much worse -- in this sense, ZHANG Chaoyang is much much better than us, and anyhow you can argue he didn't have a job over here or a family to worry about blah blah. But nobody can deny that he has the outstanding insight and enough edurance. At that time, my annual income rose from around $30k in the beginning of 1995 to more than $200k during the peak of Internet boom (I am living in an expensive metro area in the northeast). But eventually decided to go back and work for the one of the top three Internet portals in China in 2000. At that time, I was on H1, had no Green Card; got a salary roughly 1/3 of what I earned over here. That was a hectic time, but still very exciting and rewarding. But I didn't prepare well, I had too many issues left in the US to resolve. Family issues made me come back with only 3 months on the job. And all you guys know now, the stock prices of those companies are all in a rage.
Got PR couple years ago. Finally the Internet boom ended. My income decreased dramatically, but still reasonably with low six digital range; and my wife about the same in a major investment bank. So we can afford kind of decent life over here compared to many average people. Bought a big house (4000+ sqf), had a very cute baby, pretty much settled down. But still, sometimes boring. You can just enjoy the life and feel not much meaningful things you can do while we are still young. I don't want to spend the whole life like this. Finally, pursaded my company (a small telecom startup) to send me back to China. Of course pursuaded my wife hard also for sending me back. I was kind of on my self in China, with a budget, with a major service provider in China on our customer's list, and over 100k compensation. Kind of dream job. But there's really a pro and con about this. Work between the US headquater and China market is not easy. We all know just like its people, US companies are highly practical. So revenue and quota in a reasonable timeframe are paramount; while China's market is really highly hyped right now. Big potentials, no doubt, otherwise I will not go back; but still, market over there is slow and difficult, requiring whole different rules compared doing business over here. It relies heavily on relationship or connection, and unfortunately, I am not particularly good at that since sometimes I still have those snobbish attitude even without the golden badget of returnees. So I eventually lost that particular account due to the deterioting telecom environment and the follow on SARS. And company feels enough is enough, so I am back in the US now, enjoying the peaceful life for a break.
There are quite a lot of returnees back in China now, particularly it is easier for people to go abroad to such countries like UK, Australia alike.
My personal experience definitely not successful stories. But just like the great "曾国藩”,“屡战屡败,屡败屡战”. From my personal experiences, following I feel is important:
1. Know yourself. Know your strength and weakness. And know what you want to achieve and what you want to do.This is all important no matter where. 2. Stay in for a long term. We all want to be successful, but in China, patience is good virtue. Particularly, China is not so predicable compared to the US. So you need to be in the play and prepare for the sudden opportunities once it comes. 3. Get your family's support. 4. Adjust yourself to different way of doing business. I feel what I lack most while in China is I don't have significant reliable friends or contacts in relevant government positions. Personally, I don't want to and am not able to become a government official back in China, since I have kind of big mouth; but I really encourage my friends who are here and who have the desire and capacity to hold a high public positions in China to go back earlier. It would become a tremendous help if you have several reliable friends in such positions.
In short, people are different all the time. So something good for you, not necessarily good for other people. Simply put, "life in the US is easier, but fewer possibilities; life in China more difficult, but hey, anything can happen".
Hope it helps. and welcome to exchange of ideas. My email is: [email protected].
