I can’t imagine why you want to do something like that to embarrass yourself and jeopardize your career, what your are doing is considered committing a suicide in your corporate career . rule NO.1, don’t ever be a fuckup in corporate world, it would be a disaster to your career if you fail to follow. It is a dog eat dog world, you do what you have to do to survive, even you have to be very aggressive. it is all politics. What I can tell from what you said is that what happened was a mess, but it depends how you look at it. Don’t be panic, it wasn’t too bad at all. Basically, even you are sincerely apologizing to whole company which I strongly urge you not to do so, you would be considered incompetent and you would go downhill for sure. I think although that was a screw-up alike, what really makes you stand out from rest of crowd is to how to deal with crisis and turn it around to show your personal charm. Here are possible remedies you might be interested to take:
1. you need to cover up the negative image which bought to you by the event, you should send out a memo to whole company to cheer up the success from event.this would save your ass. You could write something showing how successful the event was. Something like, company is doing so well under the leadership of xxxx(you need to kiss ass big time now, otherwise you would be sorry for sure) , also it was supported by whole company as a teamwork(you are not only person running the show! ), even high ranking local officials rescheduled to attend; the event got much more attention in industry, unexpected people showed up too, I am not going to teach you how to kiss ass here, blah blah…. That would show you as a captain in the event have done extraordinary work, more importantly sending out a message which event was a blast and event was a milestone showing accomplishment and achievement under leadership of your boss. I dare anyone would put shit on that without a serious thought on their job security.
2. you might want to talk to your boss in private. Your boss doesn’t need to hear any fuckup per se, he is more interested in your damage control skill when facing crisis, which makes you to be a rising star. Certainly there are some unhappy folks out there, you might want to pamper them a bit. You could suggest your boss to establish closer relationship with those officials and key players in that industry from this great PR event. Suggesting your boss to spend some dough to make those unhappy people happy, your boss would be very interested in doing so. Only concern he might have is to piss off those “important” guests. What you could do is that sending out thankyou card/flowers/gift certificate/bar/body massage/ …….,etc, whatever you need to do, be creative, gal. in terms of folks inside the company, taking those who were feeling left-out out to celebrate “wonderful event” would sound very reasonable, they would very much like something like that. See, this way, you are a good fire fighter. your shining people skill would be appreciated by your boss.
3. you might get all the parties involved in the event to hold a “post-launch” kind of meeting. You need show your leadership quality. After meeting, sending out a memo to your boss to say that you are taking initiative to have a meeting to talk about process to make things run smoother next time, even we had a pretty successful event.
