typically over walkie talkie you can pick up info when others talk: a resource sometimes better than news from radio station or TV
another is that you can use it to keep in contact with your own family members and stay in touch to coordinate actions
then, you can always ask for help from others on the channels
with your own walkie talkie
one time i took a group of chinese customers toured in europe
and the french, italian and german police were often on my channels...not sure but you may need license there?
