bullshit is needed when you walk down the isle and run into hundres of guys/gals.
bullshit is needed have have a tough client and you need him/her to buy your idea so things can get going
but when it comes to bidding for a position, it is everything but bullshit: presentation is about how to effectively convey what you want to sell convincingly to the other side. that requires
having a real good self assessment
collecting info on your competitions
running an analysis to compare what do you have and don't
as versus what do they have and don't
then highlight why, where and how your strength would superceed their strength, put it in nice but simple perspective and shoot it to them in perfect logic
it does not matter if you have thick german, indian or chinese accent, or even not as fluent, what counts and communicates well is the logics.
of course, unless they were just doing ti for a show or they have a hidden agenda
i just posted for an opening internally. but i know i would not have the right candidates to bring what i need to the table. but it was required. so i posted.
then i had to go through a lot to explain nicely why they disqualified.
i had my eye on an external applicant who has a master degree in the area of expertise i need: an math engineer
while the position was for logistics coordinator. everyone probably thoguht i was crazy i presume. but i am doing this for a reason. i wan to deploy forecast model to reduce inventory, and i am in need for trained capability to bring that in house.
people responded to my post had no idea what i had at hands and what i was really looking for.
i did quite a campaign to justify my decision by having the candidate interviewed by many other managers who had no reason to do so, just to build the consensus that this candidate is a brilliant person with impressive background. just so that people know i did not hire the candidate because that is a young female and i am stupid enough to fall for that.
so you see, you are lookign from your side, but you may not have the entire picture what was going on. maybe you did a good presentation but you were really just needed so they can make it look fair. or maybe you failed in a good home work
as where why and how your strength can contribute more value to the given position...
