Homeland Security, Terrorism
Obama: Obama, a member the Senate's Homeland Security and Government Affairs committee, has been generally critical of the Bush Administration's actions in the war on terror. He opposes warrantless wiretapping. He has made calls for so-called risk-ba<x>sed funding for Homeland Security, asserting that Homeland Security funding has been hijacked by pork-barrel special interests. His main concern is the lack of security at the nation's chemical plants. Obama wants to close the military prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
McCain: McCain has generally supported the Bush Administration's stance on homeland security issues. He sees the use of warrantless wiretaps as lawful. But in a break from the current Administration, McCain, who was tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, has been a leading voice in calls to ban the CIA from using harsh interrogation techniques. While McCain supports closing Guantanamo Bay, he opposed the recent Supreme Court decision to allow inmates housed there to challenge their detention in civilian courts.
