Health Care
McCain: The Arizona Senator's plan focuses on increasing choices for insurance coverage. McCain would institute a tax credit to help families cover costs. A part of the credit rebate would be sent straight to the insurer of choice, and there would be an option to deposit remaining money in a Health Savings Account to save for catastrophic illnesses. McCain has said he will not require insurers to cover patients with pre-existing conditions. Instead, he proposes creating state-sponsored nonprofit corporations to contract with insurers to provide care for chronically ill patients.
Obama: Obama's plan creates a national health plan much like the one used to insure members of Congress. He also would create a government agency to prescreen insurance programs for fairness and quality. Presumably, insurers would adopt those standards to gain approval from the agency and more access to customers. Obama would require health coverage for children but not adults. He also plans to create a reinsurance plan to help small businesses afford to provide insurance to their employees.
