Housing Crisis
Obama: Obama supports congressional action to help people with adjustable-rate loans obtain federally backed fixed-interest-rate loans. He has also proposed a $10 billion Foreclosure Prevention Fund to help homeowners who were victims of fraud sell a home if it's beyond their means, or modify their loan to avoid foreclosure or bankruptcy. Obama also supports letting judges modify mortgages in bankruptcy courts, a new 10% mortgage tax credit, and stricter regulation of lenders.
McCain: McCain does not support government bailouts of "irresponsible" lenders or borrowers. He has repeatedly said he would consider a plan to help "legitimate borrowers," not speculators, but has offered little specifics. He recently changed his position and now backs letting eligible homeowners refinance with Federal Housing Authority Loans. He does not support lowering the down payment requirement for FHA mortgages. He does not support giving power to bankruptcy judges to rewrite the terms of contracts. But he has called on mortgage companies to be patriotic and "help their customers and their nation out," by renegotiating loans. McCain says his housing policy welcomes "any and all proposals, ba<x>sed on their costs and benefits."
